born 1963 · British

Young British Artists — confessional autobiographical art

Tracey Emin turned her own life — sex, abortion, drink, grief, illness — into the material of her art, in appliquéd blankets, neon handwriting, drawings, paintings and the notorious unmade bed. Once the enfant terrible of the Young British Artists, she is now a Royal Academician, a Dame, and the driving force behind an art school in Margate.

How to spot them

  • ▸The artist's own shaky handwriting turned into pink or blue neon, spelling out a raw personal line
  • ▸Appliquéd blankets and tents stitched with names, insults and confessions in cut-out capitals
  • ▸Thin, scratchy expressionist drawings and paintings of a female nude, alone on a bed
  • ▸Margate — the seaside town of her childhood, and now of her studios and foundation
