Portrait of Bong Joon-ho

Bong Joon-ho

born 1969 · South Korean

New Korean Cinema

Bong Joon-ho directs genre films that refuse to stay inside their genre: a monster movie that is really about official incompetence, a detective story with no solution, a class satire that turns into a home invasion. In 2020 his Parasite became the first film not in English to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, and the first film since 1955 to take both the Palme d'Or and Best Picture. Almost everything he makes is, underneath, about inequality.

How to spot them

  • ▸Abrupt tonal swerves — slapstick into horror into grief inside a single scene
  • ▸Vertical space as class: a train running front to back, a flat above and a bunker below, a tower block
  • ▸Song Kang-ho in five films; storyboards drawn in full by Bong himself, earning him the nickname 'Bong Tae-il' — Bong Detail
  • ▸Incompetent or malign authority: police, government ministries, corporations, the US military presence
  • ▸A career that moves fluently between Korean-language films and English-language international productions
