Art

Francis Bacon

1909–1992 · Irish-born British

Figurative art (School of London)

Francis Bacon was a Dublin-born British painter whose raw, distorted images of the human figure made him one of the most powerful artists of the post-war era. His screaming popes, smeared portraits and triptychs of isolated, contorted bodies express violence, desire, mortality and existential anguish.

How to spot them

  • ▸Twisted, smeared, fleshy figures whose faces seem wiped or blurred, often with gaping screaming mouths
  • ▸Figures trapped inside thin linear cages or glass-box "space frames", set against flat, intense backgrounds of orange, purple, pink or black
  • ▸Screaming popes based on Velázquez's Portrait of Innocent X, often behind vertical streaks like curtains
  • ▸Frequent triptychs (three panels), portraits of friends and lovers such as Lucian Freud and George Dyer
