Christopher Nolan

born 1970 · British-American

Contemporary blockbuster auteurism

Christopher Nolan went from a £3,000 black-and-white debut shot at weekends to the most powerful director working at scale, making intricate puzzle films with the budgets of franchise cinema. Time is his subject — reversed, fractured, dilated or running at several speeds at once — and celluloid is his medium, shot on film and shown in IMAX wherever possible. He won his first Oscars in 2024 and was knighted the same year.

How to spot them

  • ▸Fractured or inverted chronology, and parallel strands running at different speeds that converge at the climax
  • ▸Practical effects over digital: a real 747 crashed, a real hospital demolished, rotating corridors built as sets
  • ▸Shot on film, often large-format IMAX, and presented with an insistence on the cinema
  • ▸A grieving, obsessive man with a dead or absent wife; a Michael Caine cameo delivering the exposition
  • ▸Ludwig Göransson or Hans Zimmer scores, and dialogue that competes with the sound mix
