Art

Paul Cézanne

1839–1906 · French

Post-Impressionism

Provençal painter who rebuilt Impressionism into something solid and structured, constructing form from blocks of colour. His geometric approach to still lifes, landscapes and bathers paved the way for Cubism and much of modern art.

  • ▸Mont Sainte-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence, built from patches of green, ochre and blue
  • ▸Blocky, parallel brushstrokes and simplified geometric forms
  • ▸Stiff, solemn peasants playing cards; triangular groups of nude bathers
