Portrait of Frida Kahlo

Art

Frida Kahlo

1907–1954 · Mexican

Surrealism / Mexicanidad

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best known for intense, symbolic self-portraits that explore pain, identity, the body and Mexican culture. Left with lifelong injuries after a bus accident, she painted her own suffering and her stormy marriage to the muralist Diego Rivera, and has become a global icon of art and feminism.

How to spot them

  • ▸Frontal self-portraits of a dark-haired woman with joined eyebrows, a faint moustache, flowers or ribbons braided into her hair, and a direct, unsmiling stare
  • ▸Traditional Tehuana dress and bright Mexican folk-art colours, often with pets — spider monkeys, parrots, a hairless dog, a deer
  • ▸Graphic imagery of the wounded body: exposed hearts, thorns, nails, surgical corsets, blood, hospital beds
  • ▸Quiz clues: the bus accident, Diego Rivera, the Blue House (Casa Azul) in Coyoacán
