We have grown used to describing the economy in abstractions: GDP, services, software, the cloud. Ed Conway, economics editor at Sky News, argues that this vocabulary has made us illiterate about the physical substrate underneath. His book takes six substances — sand, salt, iron, copper, oil and lithium — and follows each from the mine or the brine pool through the furnaces and refineries to the finished objects in our pockets and walls. The result is a portrait of an industrial world that is far larger, older and more fragile than the ethereal one we talk about.
The core argument
Conway’s central point is that the modern economy is not becoming weightless. It is becoming more material-intensive, and we simply moved the mess somewhere we don’t look. Humanity now extracts more rock and sediment in a single year than it did across almost the whole prior span of the species; the excavation required to sustain contemporary life dwarfs anything in history. Yet the supply chains delivering it are astonishingly narrow, and often depend on a handful of sites, firms or processes with no meaningful substitute.
He builds this out of reporting rather than assertion. The silicon in every chip starts as rock fed into an electric arc furnace with coking coal and wood chips, and the purest quartz for the crucibles used in that industry comes from a very small number of places. Salt is not a condiment but the feedstock of the chemical industry, and the nitrogen fertiliser derived from the same industrial complex is the reason a large fraction of humanity can eat. Iron becomes steel through processes that have changed less since the Victorian era than anyone expects. Copper is the nervous system of electrification, and the ore grades keep falling, so ever more rock must be crushed for the same metal. Oil is not just fuel but the raw material of plastics, fertilisers and medicines. Lithium is the newest entry and the one where demand is outrunning the geology fastest.
That leads to the book’s most important and least comfortable conclusion. Decarbonisation is not a software problem. Building the wind turbines, grids, batteries and electric cars implied by net zero means an enormous increase in mining, smelting and refining — activities that are themselves energy-hungry and carbon-emitting, and whose industrial chemistry has no easy green substitute. Conway is not a pessimist about the transition; he is insistent that we are underestimating what it physically requires.

But on its central claim — that we have forgotten what the economy is made of — it is convincing and unusually well reported.
